“The Bird” is our favorite mountain in Utah, it has a cult like following for a reason. We love the extreme mountain terrain that sets Snowbird apart from the rest of the bunch!
Snowbird is best suited for the avid skier or snowboarder searching for the ultimate adrenaline rush. While intermediates can also have a blast at Snowbird, it is sure to challenge you to take your skiing to new heights. What Makes Snowbird Special?
The Tram – The iconic tram whisks skiers to the peak in just 13 minutes, where jaw dropping 360 degree views engulf your senses.
10 additional chairlifts give access to 2,500 acres of unbelievable terrain. With 66% deemed advanced/expert only, you can see why Snowbird attracts the best of the best. Check out the winter trail map to get an overview of the mountain terrain.
This is the place where the steep and deep fantasy becomes a reality. Face shots and hoots are an all-day affair. The magic of “The Bird” must be experienced to really comprehend just how special this place really is.
The hike-to terrain rivals that of the best backcountry lines, and earning your turns in Snowbird delivers in memories that last a lifetime.
The best hike-to terrain can be found at the top of the Gad 2 Chairlift. Exit the Gad 2 touring gates, it’s a 20-30 minute strenuous hike, but it is definitely worth it. The buttery turns and steep decent will have you hooting with your buddies all the way back down the mountain.
If the Gad 2 gates are closed, check out the Baldy hike. Take the tram to the top and head skiers right, you will come up on the ridge line just above the Peruvian chairlift. It’s about a 10-15 minute hike to the peak, once strapped in you can traverse skiers right to find your perfect line of decent.
These hikes are not for the intermediate or casual skier, you must be an expert to enter these areas and be comfortable in deep powder.
This magical white room is easily accessable from the Salt Lake Airport. It’s located in Little Cottonwood Canyon, just 45 minutes from Salt Lake City. There are multiple on mountain accommodations offering slope side lodging.
Staying on the mountain at Snowbird is the only way to guarantee first chair freshies.
When the storms hit Snowbird, locals flock to the mountain in droves. This place gets busy, but the early bird gets the worm, so don’t get caught in traffic driving up the canyon on a powder day.

Parking at Snowbird is free for first come first serve lots, it’s a good idea to arrive early. Paid parking reservations can be made to ensure a guaranteed spot in the paid lots.

Plus, Alta’s “No-Snowboarding” policy ensures that the mountain remains a pure skiing haven.
The mountain vibe at Alta is both laid-back and passionately skier centric. It feels like a community of kindred spirits, all united by a love for the sport and the majestic outdoors.

Solitude is an incredibly special place located in Big Cottonwood Canyon. As an unlimited Ikon Pass destination, it sees its fair share of crowds these days.
Unlike days of the past (Pre-Ikon) when Solitude Ski Resort was truly a place of solitude.
While it can get crowded, it is still an amazing place to ski and snowboard. Solitude spans 1,200 skiable acres with 8 chairlifts and 82 named runs. 50% of the terrain is considered advanced/expert.
There are plenty of options for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities to explore. The dedicated beginners area and plethora of lesson options make Solitude a great place to learn to ski.
The small quaint village at solitude caters to families with a beautiful outdoor pool facility, gym, game room and fireside s’mores after a long day of shredding.
Once the lifts stop spinning for the day, it becomes a quiet and peaceful place. With just a few restaurants and a friendly local watering hole, mellow vibes are what Solitude is all about.
Enjoy après ski at the Thirsty Squirrel, play some shuffle board or catch the latest football game with friends.
Solitude is a lovely place to escape the hustle and bustle of larger resorts like Park City.

If we’re not charging big lines at Snowbird, you will usually find us waiting on rope drops in Honeycomb Canyon at Solitude.

Brighton Ski Resort – Best Night Skiing
Brighton makes our list as our top night skiing destination in Utah. While the day skiing at Brighton is also amazing, the night skiing sets it apart from the pack.
Set in upper Big Cottonwood Canyon just past Solitude Ski Resort, is a place where the lifts do not stop spinning until 8pm.
The best part about night skiing at Brighton Ski Resort is, it’s inexpensive! The vibe is youthful and fun, catering to the intermediate skier and park rider.
Brighton’s main park is lit up at night for those sending it to the moon. The expansive lift operations and lights, illuminate an exceptionally large area for skiers to enjoy.
With multiple lifts spinning the night away, night skiing is a must try while visiting Utah.
Take a break at Molly Greens bar and enjoy a local brew or a burger with friends. This old school A Frame restaurant and bar is the place to be in Brighton.
It is a wonderful place to end the day and après ski even if you do not participate skiing under the lights. Warm up with an Irish coffee before making the trek back to the city.

Brian Head Ski Resort – Best Small Resort
Just 3.5 hours south of Salt Lake City, and only 30 minutes north of Cedar City lies Brian Head Ski Resort. Brian Head Ski Resort is a true hidden gem (although its gaining popularity).
Brian Head holds the record for Utah’s highest base elevation of 9,600 feet (about 2.93 km). This makes for some of the best Utah powder, due to the cold temperatures at high altitude!
We believe Brian Head is the best small resort in Utah to get your powder fix. Offering just 650 skiable acres, what it lacks in size, it makes up for with no crowds and fresh lines all day.
This Utah ski resort has two connected mountains, Giant Steps, and Navajo, offering 71 runs and 8 chair lifts for all abilities. Navajo is the dedicated beginner area, with large wide open green runs to make learning a breeze.
While Brian Head Ski Resort does not offer the gnarly terrain and expert chutes like its more expansive competitors, the blower pow makes for fun times and family friendly vibes.
While the high elevation at Brian Head makes for excellent snow conditions, it can also cause some uncomfortable side effects.
Altitude sickness, heart palpitations and a tough time sleeping are all symptoms we have personally experienced on visits to this gem.
Make sure to stay hydrated, drinking water before and during your visit to Brian Head will help to avoid any negative altitude effects.
If you need a good reason to experience Brian Head other than amazing snow, the relative low cost of lift tickets and lodging will have you smiling all day. Skiing and snowboarding at Brian Head Ski Resort is affordable.
Adult lift tickets range from $90-$120 a day, with multi-day discounts and online pricing specials. It is a wonderful place to stop on a road trip for a quick 1- or 2-day powder session.
Brian Head Ski Resort is an affordable family vacation option for those who want to ski without breaking the bank. Limited lodging options are available with ski in- ski out capabilities, however the lodging near the base is more affordable than other big mountain resorts in Utah.

Brian Head is a quick 30 minute jaunt off I15 freeway, it’s a fun place to stop while road tripping through Utah.
Brian Head ski resort feels like your own private country club, it’s not often these days that you can find fresh lines all day any where else.
Weekends and holidays tend to be busier with the influx of tourists coming in from Vegas and other surrounding cities, but still nowhere near the crowds of major mountains.
