Visiting Sierra at Tahoe as a kid, I always knew that this little corner of California was something special. Family ski trips were my favorite vacations, the memories made and true joy of being on the mountain had a profound effect on my life.
If you’re like me, and ski or ride on the regular, you know that there’s one question that always gets thrown around:
“What is your favorite ski resort?”
For me, it’s not just about where you learned to shred or grew up hitting the slopes – it’s about where you choose to spend your hard-earned cash on a season pass.
Sierra at Tahoe (formally Sierra Ski Ranch) was the place I laid down my Benjamin’s on a locals pass that allowed me to rack up many, many days throughout my early twenties.
Sierra’s mountain vibe is outstanding. With all the resorts in Tahoe to choose from, to this day, Sierra at Tahoe is still considered the ‘Local’s Choice.’
As someone who loves Sierra at Tahoe for all the reasons above – first turns, childhood memories, and season pass status – I can tell you that this mountain has a charm that is hard to find elsewhere.
As I delved deeper into the resort’s history and culture, I discovered what a rad place this mountain is.
Let’s jump into all the things that make Sierra at Tahoe a must visit resort.

A Family Affair
Sierra at Tahoe’s humble beginnings date back to 1946, by brothers Ray and Floyd Barrett, who decided to turn their passion into a reality.
With the help of their family and friends, the brothers built the first chairlift in the area, and Sierra Ski Ranch was born. Fast forward to today, and it’s clear that the Barrett’s legacy lives on.
A few years later Vern and Bobbie Sprock bought the company and eventually moved it to its current location.
The history runs deep at Sierra at Tahoe, while no longer family owned and operated, it still has a strong focus on community and connecting the people to the beauty that this resort has to offer.
If you chat with locals and staff members, you will get the sense that everyone at Sierra at Tahoe is part of one big happy family, united by their love for skiing and the great outdoors.
Terrain That’ll Keep You Coming Back
Sierra-at-Tahoe’s terrain is a skier’s paradise. With over 2,000 acres of skiable land, there’s something for every level of skier or snowboarder.
Great news just out this season, Sierra at Tahoe has joined the Ikon Pass for 2024! Now it’s even easier to access this locals favorite resort! Sierra at Tahoe also offers a first responder discounted pass that helps first responders and family members save money all season.
From gentle groomers to steep chutes and glades, the resort offers an incredible variety of trails that’ll keep you coming back for more. 9 terrain parks keep the groms entertained, while the powder hounds can explore the trees in Jacks Bowl.
With the glistening waters of Lake Tahoe in the distance, this mountain truly gives you a sense that you’ve connected to something special.
Beginners can take in the sights from the top of the mountain off the Grandview chairlift. The mellow green run “Sugar and Spice” leads you back down the mountain with ease. My first memories of learning to ski are off this very run with my parents back in the 1980’s. Sierra at Tahoe will always hold a special place in my heart.
If you are courageous enough to venture into the expert terrain, Huckleberry backcountry gates will have you scoring deep lines. Huckleberry Bowl offers some of the best resort backcountry access in Tahoe.
Let me tell you, this area is so fun! These zones will blow your hair back, from steep inclines, and freeride terrain, this area is an experience you won’t soon forget. Pack your powder skis and snowboard, you’re going to need them when the storms strike Sierra.
Make sure to check the trail map before heading out onto the mountain to make the most of your day.
